Phitsanulok police are desperately trying to determine the identity of a foreign male found Saturday afternoon in a canal who they believe might have been a victim of murder.
Residents of Wang Khi Lek village in Phitsanulok province were shocked when they discovered the body of a dead man floating in a canal in Tha Chang subdistrict of Phrom Phiram. When investigators from Phrom Phiram Provincial Police Station pulled the male corpse out of Khlong Mem at around 14:00, they soon suspected the worst: murder.
“The body had already started to decompose and was in a bad condition,” investigator Pol Maj Chuchip Pumchiao told Phitsanulok Hotnews> Saturday. “His body was bloated and laced with bruises.” The height and colour of his skin strongly indicated the man was a foreigner. However, they were not yet able to confirm his nationality since no identification documents could be found. “We estimate him to be between 40 and 45 years of age”, Pol Maj Chuchip added.
The unidentified man was found wrapped in a blanket and lying face down in a shallow spot of the canal. He was wearing a blue t-shirt and navy blue shorts. On his left forearm, police noticed a tattoo with the words “HAPPY FAMILY HEM SIRI LUKY PINK” whose meaning remained unclear.
The body itself was in an advanced state of decomposition when he was discovered, indicating that he must have been dead for plenty of days. “The scent of decay was so strong that it filled the entire area,” Pol Maj Chuchip described the scene.
A nylon rope was wrapped around the ankles and thighs of the man which was attached to a heavy wooden stool. Investigators counted four stab wounds through the chest area and four on the back of the victim. To conduct a more thorough examination of the body, the corpse has been sent to Putchinrat Hospital in Phitsanulok’s Mueang district.
Officers from Phrom Phiram Provincial Police Station interviewed residents of the village nearby, none of them had ever seen or heard about the man before. Investigators assume that at least two other people were involved in the murder and that the actual killing took place at a different location. To reduce chances of anyone discovering the body, they might have used the rural area surrounding the village as a place to dump the body.
In an initial investigation report, Pol Maj Chuchip concluded that the victim’s injuries might have been the result of a fight with one or more persons. “They probably wrapped him in a blanket in order not to leave bloodstains in the car during the transport,” the report reads.
“The highest priority now is to determine the identity of the victim”, Pol Maj Chuchip said. “If he is indeed a foreigner, we will then contact the embassy to report the case to the relevant authorities.” Because of that, police have asked the public to forward any information regarding the incident to Phrom Phiram Provincial Police Station.
