A 49-year-old Australian tourist from New South Wales died after a cement truck crushed him to death on a quiet road near Tri Trang Beach in Phuket, The Phuket News reported.
Kusoldharm rescue workers were called to the scene at 18:46. The accident had happened on a curve near Tri Trang Beach in Phuket’s Patong subdistrict.
The victim, whose name was withheld by The Phuket News, was found under the right side of the heavy cement truck. His scooter, a Honda Click, license plate 1กฉ 7072 Phuket, was on found lying on its side, left of the cement truck.
Even though police found a helmet at the scene, the victim had sustained severe head injuries during the crash and police believe these to be the cause of his death. Rescue volunteers took the body to Patong Hospital.
Phuket Tourist Police reported that the man had checked in alone at the Baan Laimai Patong Beach Resort on March 27 and was due to check out on April 1.
He had rented the Honda Click scooter from a shop in Soi Kebsup behind the Laimai Hotel. The Thai Tourist Police said they were still waiting for details of the investigation into the accident.
Police have notified the Australian Consulate in Phuket of the fatal accident and death, but have not released the victim’s name.
