A van crash in Phichit province last night killed four Mexican tourists and injured six others, police said today. Among the killed passengers was the 70-year-old driver Paula Irene Cornish.
The victims were family members on vacation in Thailand. They had been en route to the historical city of Sukhothai when the crash occurred during heavy rain between kilometre makers 68 and 69 in tambon Noen Sawang.
Rescue teams said the vehicle had hit the tree head-on and the victims were still trapped in wreckage when they arrived, Thai media reported on Friday. It took them almost an hour to free the dead and pull the injured from the van.
“They just arrived in Thailand last night, at Don Mueang Airport, and rented a van,” said Police Lt. Col. Surawat Surawatmontri, an officer at Pho Prathap Chang Police Station. Surawat speculated that the crash may have occurred because the tourist who was driving at the time was exhausted.
The six injured survivors have been admitted to a local hospital.
