Akim Boukstbbouma

A French tourist has been stabbed to death and his Moroccan friend wounded after brawl at a Patong beach pub in Phuket province suddenly turned violent.

Kathu Police Station was informed of the incident at 4:12 early Wednesday morning, Lt Sineenart Cherdchutrakulthong said. When they arrived, they found the body of 24-year-old Akim Boukstbbouma from France with two stab wounds to the chest in front of the Orchid Resotel in Soi Sansabai, Patong subdistrict.

The alleged perpetrator, a 33-year-old Thai named Somporn Kukkaew, was taken into custody, Pol Lt Sineenart confirmed. Mr Somporn was working as a bouncer at a pub in the Soi who witnesses say at one point pulled a knife and stabbed Mr Boukstbbouma while injuring his friend Said Missoury, 23.

According to the official police report, the two foreigners were walking down the street toward Orchid Resortel Hotel when a motorcycle ridden by Mr Somporn hit them, sparking a quarrel that turned violent.

However, Thai news website Manager Online, quoting witnesses, said the fight actually began inside a nearby pub. One of three security guards then pulled a 20 cm long knife after trying to toss the pair out, fatally stabbing Mr Boukstbbouma and slashing his arm.

The fight shifted onto the street after Mr Missoury ran off but returned when he heard Boukstbbouma screaming. “I turned around and saw him collapse in the road,” Mr Missoury said to the police.

Mr Boukstbbouma later died in hospital. Mr Somporn, who suffered a knife wound to his wrists, and the other bouncers fled the scene. The injured bouncer sought treatment at Vachira Phuket Hospital where he was arrested.

Police were examining CCTV footage to sort out the details before filing charges. The knife used in the attack was not found.
