Alexey Manoylenko

Two male Russian nationals died early on Friday morning after the car they were driving crashed into an electric pole on a bypass road in Phuket.

The deceased men, Alexey Manoylenko (29) and Anton Asanov, were trapped in the car wreck when rescue workers arrived on the scene shortly after midnight, Maj Nattaya Suwanpong of Mueang Phuket Provincial Police Station said. “Rescue workers had to cut the vehicle in order to release the victims,” he explained.

Witnesses said the car had been travelling north in the overtaking lane on Chalermprakiet Rd (Highway 402), opposite Siam Niramit, when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed it into a pole on the side of the road. Police noted that the street was wet and slippery at the time of the accident.

“We will investigate further to find out more about the circumstances of the crash,” Maj Nattaya said. “We will also check whether the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

The bodies of the victims were taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital.
