A foreign tourist of unknown nationality died after slipping on rocks and being swept into the sea on Phuket beach.
Karon Provincial Police Station was notified of the incident on Sunday afternoon at around 16:00. Investigator Pol Lt Capt Badiwat Yodkwan was assigned to the case and rushed to the place of the accident.
Near a rock, police found the man. He was wearing a t-shirt and trousers, indicating that this might not have been a swimming accident. Police later identified the man as 60-year-old Mr Alexsey Hromov.
Witnesses said the unidentified tourist was taking a stroll along the rocky coastline when he accidentally collapsed. High waves then swept him out to the open sea. A foreigner who was snorkelling in the area and a Thai longtail boat driver were able to pull the man out.
Emergency responders from Third Naval Area Command and the Karon Municipality Tourist Assistance Centre tried to revive Mr Hromov, but he was pronounced dead while being transported to Vajira Phuket Hospital.
Police found red scrape marks resulted from the collapse on his buttocks, but there were no other injuries to his body. Police will conclude the official cause of death after the release of autopsy results.
