A 29-year-old Senegal human rights activist drowned whilst swimming in a water reservoir in Loei province on Tuesday morning.
Officers from Mueang Loei Provincial Police Station were informed of the incident at 10:20. The body of the male victim, who police later identified as Aliou Diaboula, was lying on the bottom of the lake in Huai Krating when officers and Sawang Rescue workers arrived at the accident site in Loei’s Kok Thong district.
It took rescue divers more than six hours to recover the body. “When he was pulled out, he had already entered rigor mortis,” Pol Maj Wanit Putwongdat said, adding that the investigation into the death of the Senegalese is still on-going.
Mr Diaboula had worked as an activist for several human rights organisations including: The International Youth Council, World Youth Alliance and Americans for Informed Democracy.
