Anna Katharina Bertram
A trip to Koh Samui ended in tragedy when a scooter carrying two young German students collided head-on with an SUV. Both tourists died at the scene.
Debris from the two vehicles was scattered all over the road as police and rescue workers arrived on the scene at about 21:00. The following day, lead investigator Pol Capt Nawi Jitdaraban of Koh Samui Provincial Police Station told reporters: “It was obvious that there had been a major crash between the scooter and the car.” The police report that states the fatal road accident took place on Highway 4169 in front of the entrance to the Koh Samui Provincial Court in the Maret subdistrict.
“We found the bodies of the two young foreigners lying in the middle of the two-lane road. We identified one of the deceased as Anna Katharina Bertram, a 24 year old female. The other was Nico Krauss, a 27-year-old male. They were both German nationals,” said Pol Capt Nawi.
A medical examiner from Koh Samui Hospital, who was accompanying police officers at the scene, confirmed that the couple were deceased before local rescue volunteers had time to arrive at the crash site. It is assumed that Mr Krauss was in control of the motorbike when the crash happened. He sustained a bloody and mortal skull fracture. The rest of his body was covered with abrasions. Ms Bertram lay face up next to her boyfriend. She suffered two broken legs and deep wounds all over her body.
Their damaged scooter, a blue and white Honda Click 125i, bearing the license plate 1กค 165 Surat Thani, was found approximately 20 metres from the bodies. Officers found a helmet, but were unable to tell which victim was wearing it at the time of the crash.
The other person involved in the crash was named as Oleg Belikov, a 46-year-old Russian. His SUV (กย 3814 Surat Thani) collided with the scooter and was originally parked on the side of the road. An inspection of the vehicle showed moderate damage on the right front side of the car.
Investigator Pol Capt Nawi questioned Mr Belikov who said that he had been on his way home from Lamai Beach in the Na Muang subdistrict when, six kilometres into the ride, the crash occurred. “He told us that he was driving normally when suddenly a scooter heading in the opposite direction crossed into his lane to overtake a truck,” Pol Capt Nawi reported. “He was clearly driving too fast to avoid the oncoming vehicle and ended up colliding with it head-on.”
Police revealed that both Ms Bertram and Mr Krauss were students at a German university and had travelled to Thailand for a vacation in Koh Samui. “They rented a scooter from a local rental shop and were exploring the island when the tragicut this time it went wrong.”
Since it is the law to conduct an autopsy on every foreigner who dies in Thailand, rescue workers took the bodies to Koh Samui Hospital. Police chief Paitoon Krachachang said police are considering possible charges against Mr Belikov, but had yet to make a decision. The German Embassy in Bangkok has been notified of the fatal accident.
