Anne-Sophie Torrijos-Faisant

For a 23-year-old French woman holidaying on the popular holiday island Phuket, her first day proved to be her last. Only hours after her arrival, she was found dead.

Anne-Sophie Torrijos-Faisant from Nanterre, France went swimming in the sea on Saturday afternoon at about 16:00 in Phuket’s Sa Khu subdistrict on the west coast of the island.  “We were informed of the incident at 16:09,” deputy investigator Pol Lt Tanakan Uchonratsami from Sa Khu Provincial Police Station said. Lifeguards on Nai Thong Beach found the victim unconscious and unresponsive amongst the rocks on the beach. She was rushed to Thalang Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead-on-arrival.

While investigating the accident, Pol Lt Tanakan learned that the victim had been to Nai Thong Beach with three or four of her friends, all of whom had arrived from Chiang Mai earlier that day. “She was swimming with friends when the surf dragged her about 30 metres away from the beach,” Lt Thanakan said.

This was the first visit to the island for Ms Torrijos-Faisant, who turned 23 on August 11. Photographs on her Instagram account indicate that she had been staying at the Andaman White Beach Resort, about 1.5 kilometres south of Nai Thong Beach. “Dream hotel in Phuket,” she wrote in one of her last uploaded pictures just hours before her death. “We’ve just booked another night because it’s so nice.”

In the absence of lifeguards patrolling the beach, Sa Khu Provincial Police Station has ordered red flags to be put up to dissuade beachgoers from swimming there until the investigation is over.
