Christian Slama

Phuket police believe that a heart attack might have killed an Austrian tourist. He was found dead in his bathroom on January 24.

The incident happened at the Patong Sunset Apartment in Phuket’s Patong subdistrict on Prabaramee Rd. At around 10:57 in the morning, the wife of the 58-year-old Austrian tourist Christian Slama discovered her husband dead in the bathroom.

Pol Lt Col Batupi Srichai, an investigator at Patong Provincial Police Station, was assigned to the case and made his way to the apartment. As police and Gusontam rescue workers arrived, they found Mr Slama lying almost naked face down on the tile floor of his bathroom with his head halfway beneath the sink. “It looked like he felt down from the toilet,” he noted.

Obvious wounds or other body marks that might indicate that a crime had taken place were not found on Mr Slama’s body. A Patong Hospital physician said the man had already been dead for around six hours, which is being disputed by Mr Slama’s family who says he had been dead not longer than 30 minutes.

When police inspected the other rooms, they found a blister of an unidentified pharmaceutical drug. “Three tablets were missing,” Pol Lt Col Batupi said. A person close to the deceased told Farang Deaths that Mr Slama had been suffering from chronic high blood pressure and used the medication for this reason.

Before he went into the bathroom, Mr Slama had high blood pressure, Mrs Slama stated. After he had failed to emerge from the bathroom half an hour later, she became concerned and opened the dear to check on her husband. She then immediately called requested the hotel staff to call an ambulance.

Initially, police believed that the medication had triggered a shock which made Mr Slama fall to the ground and caused his death. However, an autopsy and reports from Mr Slama’s family revealed that he died of a heart attack.
