Claude André Antoine Tohrer
Shoppers at the Central Festival Mall in Pattaya watched in horror as an elderly French man leapt to his death from the sixth floor.
The incident occurred last night. Because of the accident, authorities decided to close the mall temporarily and announced so via a P.A. Police officers and rescue workers were dispatched immediately to the scene.
Police later identified the deceased as Mr Claude André Antoine Tohrer, 71. Pol Capt Weerayuth Kangkala, Deputy Inspector, at Pattaya Provincial Police Station, had received the alert of the incident at 23:30, he told Thai media.
Mr Tohrer’s lifeless body was found lying face-down at the top of the escalator on the third floor. The fall resulted in multiple severe injuries which police assumed to be the cause of death.
According to eyewitnesses, the man, who appeared to be visibly distressed, started climbing over the railings on the sixth floor amid shouts of caution from shoppers below. They tried to dissuade him from jumping, but he jumped nonetheless, a witness was quoted.
Pattaya police are treating the investigation into the case as a suicide. They hope that CCTV footage from nearby shops which had captured the fatal fall help them build a better picture of the circumstances surrounding his death.
Rescue workers transported the body to the Police General Hospital’s Institute of Forensic Medicine for an official autopsy.
