Police in Bangkok have reported the death of an elderly Swiss man. He died after falling from the 8th floor of his apartment on Sunday morning.
A resident of the Siriruedee Place condominium in 164 Ramkhamhaeng Rd discovered the body at about 06:00. Officers of Min Buri Police Station who inspected the scene found the man next to a grey Toyota Camry with the license plate ษข 3119 Bangkok in the parking lot of the building.
Investigators noted damage to the car’s hood. “We believe that he impacted the car and rolled off onto the asphalt,” investigator Pol Maj Susirichok Tanyanon explained his assumption. Police identified the man as Daniel Scharer, a 71-year-old retiree from Switzerland.
According to official police records, Mr Scharer had been renting a room on the 8th floor of the apartment for four years and lived off his pension. Neighbours told investigators that Mr Scharer showed signs of severe depression.
“We inspected his room but could not find anything out of the ordinary,” Pol Maj Susirichok said. “All valuables were still in his room, signs of a fight or struggle was not found.” However, Pol Maj Susirichok noted that the window facing the parking lot stood open.
An autopsy scheduled at General Police Hospital in Bangkok is going to examine the body to determine the official cause of death. The fatal fall has already been reported to the Swiss Embassy in Bangkok, Pol Maj Susirichok confirmed.
