Chiang Mai police have opened an investigation into the death of a 60-year-old Swiss who was found murdered in the Mueang district on Tuesday evening.
Officers from Phu Ping Ratchaniwet Police Station were informed about 21:30 that a neighbour, concerned he had not seen Mr Staub for two days, had discovered the victim’s body at 9 Soi 8 Suan Dok Rd in Chiang Mai’s Suthep subdistrict.
Police and rescue workers found the stabbed, strangled and lifeless body of Daniel Straub at the foot of a wooden stairway leading to the second floor of his two-storey house. A telephone cable had been wrapped round his neck; the other end tied to a bannister. He was wearing a white T-shirt and yellow fisher pants: a stab wound, most likely from a knife, was found in the victim’s stomach. A brief medical examination estimated that Mr Straub had been dead for less than 24 hours before he was discovered.
Investigating officer Pol Col Tawatchai Pongwiwatanachai later revealed that a Kawasaki D-Tracker motorcycle belonging to Mr Straub was missing. Police found the stolen vehicle a day later. Pol Maj Gen Mondri Sambunnanon from Phu Ping Ratchaniwet Police Station told local media. “This is an obvious murder case, but, we have not yet made any arrests.”
Police questioned Mr Straub’s neighbour who told officers that the Swiss man had been living alone in the house for about six years. On Sunday, he reportedly saw Mr Straub for the last time outside his house reading a book. “We also discovered that Mr Straub had prepared his last Will,” said Pol Col Tawatchai. According to his Will, all his property, including the house and the motorcycle, was to be passed down to a close friend who police declined to name. Mr Straub’s life was insured for 400,000 baht and the aforementioned close friend named as the sole beneficiary.
Khaosod Online reported that Mr Straub was ‘a flirtatious person’. Unusually, though his injuries suggested that he had been a victim of a violent crime, police did not report any signs of a struggle at the scene. A post-mortem examination is expected to paint a clearer picture of how Daniel Straub died.
