David Neil Christopher

The body of a British man was found hanging in a guesthouse room’s bathroom Sunday evening, Thai online newspaper Chiang Mai News reports on February 21.

At approximately 23:00, Chiang Mai Provincial Police Station received a report about an apparent suicide inside Lek Guesthouse on 50/1 Chaiyapoom Rd Soi 3, Chang Moi subdistrict after guests had noticed a foul odour coming from one of the rooms.

When officers of police, tourist police and medical staff entered room number C6 of the guesthouse, they perceived a strong smell of decay. In the bathroom, they discovered the body of David Neil Christopher, 35, hanging from a curved steel window.

There was no evidence of foul play and it is believed that he had been dead for several days prior discovery. Police also found 10,000 baht in cash and various medicines in the room.

According to investigations, the man had rented the room from February 19 and was last seen drinking beer at the front of the guesthouse on the same day. He allegedly told the caretaker that he would be going backpacking for a few days, so nobody doubted his absence.

Police suspect the suicide was due to stress or in connection with a congenital disease but will continue to investigate the case.
