Dimitry Sergeyevich Semenov

Two Russian men died in a road accident in Surat Thani province when they rushed through an intersection and collided with a local pickup.

“There it is,” said Chief District Officer Tawon Promchim pointing to a flat screen TV in one of the offices at the Tha Khoei Sub District Administration Organization. He played a CCTV recording showing a dim intersection in the Tha Khoei subdistrict of Surat Thani 21:00 on Thursday night. The intersection was lit only by the two or three orange street lamps.

The main angle of the camera was focused on one of the roads leading up to the intersection and initially showed an empty road: no cars, no motorbikes. After a few minutes, you could see a white Toyota Yaris approaching the intersection at speed. Half way across, it was suddenly T-boned by a silver pickup coming from the left on the camera.

“The collision was so intense that both vehicles seemed to bounce off each other and ended up more than 50 metres on the opposite side of the road to each other,” Mr Tawon told reporters who were seen recording the aftermath of the accident on their smartphones at the scene.

According to a posted by หนังสือพิมพ์ประชามติมหาชน on Friday, August 18, 2017: The CCTV footage showed the last moments of the two Russians’ lives. Dimitry Sergeyevich Semenov and his friend, Ivan Sorokin, 32 and 31 respectively. Police identified both the victims from their passports. At the time of the crash, Mr Semenov was driving while Mr Sorokin was in the passenger seat. The vehicle (license plate 4 กง-5702) was registered to a Toyota Yaris in Bangkok.

Police and rescue volunteers of the Kusonsattha Foundation arriving on the scene shortly after 21:00, found both vehicles on the side of the road at an intersection of Highway 4112 and 2007 in the Tha Khoei subdistrict. Mr Tawon told reporters later that day: “Rescue workers had difficulty freeing Mr Semenov and Mr Sorokin because the car was so badly damaged”. In fact, both cars were complete write-offs.

Sadly, rescuers discovered that both Mr Semenov and Mr Sorokin had died of their injuries by the time they reached the gurneys. “There was nothing we could do,” said one of the first responders to the scene said.

Their victims’ bodies were sent to Tha Chang Hospital to allow medical examiners to conduct an autopsy and determine the official cause of death.

The driver and passenger of the other vehicle, a Gurkha-coloured Isuzu pickup (บท 1700 Surat Thani) survived the crash.  Sunton Saentong, 51, and his 43-year-old wife Wimonrat Klaisuban sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Tha Chang Hospital.

The Governor of Surat Thani, Mr Uachai Innak, has instructed officials to work with the tourism police and inform the Russian Embassy in Bangkok of the two fatalities.
