Frank Monte Madeiros
Prachuap Khiri Khan police are dealing with the death of a 71-year-old former US soldier. He was found dead in his rented apartment on Wednesday.
Mueang Prachuap Provincial Police Station confirmed that Superintendent Pol Col Ampon Amonrakbricha was informed of the death at 13:00. “We were called by Mr Winai Chobtamgit who said that there was a dead person in one of the apartments of a local community housing project.”
When police and rescue workers arrived at the scene and inspected the apartment in question, they found Mr Frank Monte Madeiros lying naked and with his face up on his bed: in his hand, the remote control for the air-conditioning. The smell of decomposition was prevalent in the room, indicating that Mr Madeiros had been dead for 24 hours or more.
On a nearby table, officers discovered an undisclosed amount of local cash in 1000, 100 and 20 baht notes- all laid out neatly. Also found was also a quantity of US dollars, two bank books showing a deposit of 1.3 million baht, the Morning News reported.
In the bedroom wardrobe, officers seized a sealed brown envelope stuffed with cash and bagged a series of prescription drugs as evidence.
Mr Winai Chobtamgit, the 55-year-old caretaker who was working for Mr Madeiros, said that his client was a retired soldier who had been living in Thailand for eight years and had recently ended his marriage to a Thai woman.
Mr Winai said that Mr Madeiros had told him he received a pension of 80,000 baht a month, but this was not enough for him to live on in the United States. It was for this reason he moved to Thailand where his pension would go further.
Police are hoping the deceased’s Nokia phone, found at the scene, will help them to contact Mr Madeiros’ relatives.
