Despite wearing helmets, two young Hungarian tourists died when the scooter they were riding crashed into a pole in Phuket early Monday morning.

Chalong Provincial Police Station was informed of the accident at around 2:40 Monday morning,” Pol Lt Saggarin Saenjaroen said who is also the lead investigator in this case. “We went straight to the scene of the location of the accident.”

On the crash site, which lies on Highway 4233 opposite the Maalai Resort and near the Al Piccolo Colo restaurant in Phuket’s Rawai subdistrict, police found a wrecked scooter laying next to the steel pole of a street light. The two foreign men who had ridden the bike laid nearby.

Talking to The Phuket News, police did not give any information on the condition of the men when they were found. However, “since they were carrying identification documents, it was easy to establish their identity”, Pol Lt Saggarin said. The victims were Gabor Asztalos, 28, and Bence Edvin Banfi, 26.

Further investigation into the course of the accident revealed that Mr Asztalos and Mr Banfi were heading towards Wiset Rd. Mr Asztalos, who was in control of the scooter, then lost control of the vehicle on the bend and crashed into the street light pole.”

Even though both men were wearing helmets, they both did not survive the sudden crash. “Mr Banfi died at the scene whereas Mr Asztalos sustained a severe head trauma and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Phuket International Hospital at around 2:58”, Pol Lt Saggarin said.

The families of Mr Banfi and Mr Asztalos were already informed of the death of their sons. The Hungarian Embassy were notified later that day.
