The former head of the Israeli Navy’s special operations unit died in Thailand after suffering a heart attack while on vacation in Pattaya.
The body of Gadi Shefi, 76, was found on Sunday in a hotel room in Pattaya, Chon Buri province after he had gone missing a week earlier. Police notified his family on Monday night.
“At this hard and painful time, we want to thank everyone for the help in finding our father,” Mr Shefi’s son Ari Shefi wrote in a statement on Facebook. Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the death and said it is assisting the family in repatriating Shefi’s body to his native Israel.
Gadi Shefi was a member of the Israeli Navy and headed the Flotilla13 special operations unit from 1976 to 1978. During this time, he supervised several then-secret operations into Lebanon.
