Gao Zhiyu

At a luxury villa in Kamala, Phuket, a Chinese tourist died during a late-night party when he fell the rooftop of the building.

Friends of the tourist who attended the private party at the luxurious Villa Cassopiea discovered the body of their friend Gao Zhiyu when they woke up late the next day.

Pol Lt Col Somnuek Damgaeo of Kamala Provincial Police was notified of the incident at about 13:00. After arriving at the villa, located in Kamala Soi 5 in Kathu district, police confirmed the death of Mr Gao. He was 30 years old and lived in Yunnan in China, documents say.

“Mr Gao was staying at the villa with two other men and three women, one of whom was his girlfriend,” Pol Maj Egachai Siri of the Tourist Police said. “The group checked in to the villa on Tuesday and were supposed to check out on Saturday.”

Pol Maj Egachai said that the villa rooftop where they were partying that night was about 20 metres high. “His friends told us that they went back to their rooms at about 01:40. However, Mr Gao remained outside to smoke.”

The news of his death came only after Mr Gao’s girlfriend woke up at about 13:00 but was not able to find him. She then alerted the rest of the group to search for him and quickly found the body.

“At this time, we do not believe that Mr Gao has been a victim of a crime or committed suicide”, Pol Maj Egachaishared his initial impressions. “It is more likely that he tried to jump into the pool beneath and missed or that he simply slipped while smoking his cigarette.”
