One day after two Chinese tourists went missing while swimming at a Phuket beach, police found their bodies.

The missing men, 21-year-old Wang Xi Dong and Guo Zi Jie, 21, were discovered around 500 metres south of Patong Beach in Patong, Phuket, rescue workers of the Kusoldharm Foundation confirmed. Their remains were recovered and brought back to shore at about 13:00 on Monday.

One day earlier, Pol Col Tassanai Orarigdech, superintendent of Patong Provincial Police Station, was notified by Liu Wei Jie, a tourist from China. “We received a report about two Chinese men who went missing after violating red-flag warnings,” Pol Col Tassanai told The Phuket News. “They went swimming at Freedom Beach in Kathu district despite high surf.”

Mr Liu, who turned out to be a friend of the two missing tourists, said that the group had arrived in Phuket on Saturday, July 15. They stayed at a hotel in Patong, police revealed. The following day, the three went to Freedom Beach in the south-west of the island at 11:30 and entered the water at 13:20. Shortly afterwards, Mr Wang and Mr Guo disappeared.

While rescue workers and marine police searched the area, police transferred the case to Karon Provincial Police Station for administrative reasons. “We have been looking for them since we received the report but we still have not found them yet,” superintendent Pol Col Sanya Thongsawad said. “However, the search will continue.”

At 13:20, The following day, rescuers spotted their bodies floating in the sea about 500 metres off Patong Beach. “We recovered their bodies and brought them to Vachira Phuket Hospital,” Pol Col Sanya said. Investigators believed that Mr Wang and Mr Guo have drowned. However, pathologists will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
