A day trip to Koh Racha Yai ended fatally for an 11-year-old girl from South Korea. She drowned after being swept away by strong waves.

According to The Phuket News, Pol Maj Thada Sodarak, an investigator from Chalong Provincial Police Station, said that the 11-year-old Haeun Park had been on a day trip to Koh Racha Yai, 17 kilometres south of Phuket in the Andaman Sea.

The family, which is due to return to South Korea on October 28, was swimming at Patok Beach when the young child was hit by strong waves and was swept into deep water at around 15:30. Her father attempted to reach her, but failed to do so.

By the time the girl was finally pulled out of the water, she was already unconscious, police said. Rescue workers who had come from Chalong Pier administered CPR, but were unable to save her life. The 11-year-old died on the way to the mainland.

Her body was taken to Vachira Hospital for further medical examination.
