A Russian man has supposedly drunk himself to death before being found lifeless in the bathroom of his house on Koh Samui.
It was early Monday morning when deputy inspector Pol Lt Biyawat Jinuoan opened the door of a small bungalow in Soi 7 of Moo 4, Mae Nam subdistrict. Shortly before, a call was made to Koh Samui Provincial Police Station reporting the death of a foreign male inside one of the rented apartments.
When police and accompanying rescue volunteers entered the residence, they immediately discovered the body of Igor Kirnarskil. Wearing black shorts and a black t-shirt, he was halfway leaning against the wall of his bathroom. Found documents identified the man as a 32-year-old Russian national.
Police noticed the high body weight of the deceased and estimated his weight to be around 150 kilogrammes. Any injuries visible to the naked eye were not seen. Death was estimated to have occurred around 30 minutes earlier.
Investigating officers also perceived a scent of alcohol coming from the body and the room itself. According to Pol Lt Biyawat, police found three empty bottles of liquor inside the room and broken eggs leaking from inside the refrigerator. No valuables were missing.
Police collected several pharmaceutical drugs as evidence, including diet medication and diabetes drugs. They had all been previously prescribed by Koh Samui Hospital.
The landlord of the apartments told police that Mr Kirnarskil had been renting the room for about two months and had been living alone. He was often seen drinking high amounts of liquor by himself. At the night of his death, the landlord continued, he went out to the nearest convenience store. He then returned to his room.
After a while, police quoted their report, the landlord heard cries for help from Mr Kirnarskil’s room. When he entered and saw him lying unconscious in the bathroom, she called the emergency service. However, as soon as they arrived, Mr Kirnarskil had already passed.
In an initial report, Pol Lt Biyawat said he might believe the combination of heavy alcohol consumption and the fact that he had a health condition has been the cause of death. A concluding autopsy will be conducted at Koh Samui Hospital.
