James Christopher Rockliffe
A British tourist could no longer cope with his relationship problems and decided to take his life by suffocating himself with a plastic bag.
“We found Mr James Christopher Rockliffe dead in his bedroom,” Pol Capt Somgiad Sansit of Chalong Provincial Police Station said to Thairath. Police did not state the full address, but said the house was located in Phuket’s Rawai subdistrict.
According to an initial police report, the 55-year-old Mr Rockliffe had been dead for at least 10 to 16 hours and was lying tucked in on the right side of the bed, naked. A black plastic bag had been placed over his head and tied at his neck with black duct tape. “We did not find any other signs of violence on the body,” confirmed investigator Pol Capt Somgiad.
When officers inspected the room, they found a suicide letter written in English on a coffee table. It said: “I love you so much but I can’t deal with this shit anymore. Goodbye my love xxx”
Police later questioned the Mr Rockliffe’s Thai girlfriend. The two had been living together in the house and often had fights about Mr Rockliffe’s excessive drinking. “She told us that on January 29, she announced she had had enough and temporarily moved out of the house,” said Pol Capt Somgiad.
When she returned to the house four days later, she received no response to her knocking. Fearing something was wrong, she broke open the front door. “When she reached the bedroom, she found him and broke down in tears.”
Pol Capt Somgiad also revealed that Mr Rockliffe was depressed about the state of their relationship and his girlfriend leaving may have tipped his depression and triggered his suicide.
Volunteers of the Phuket Ruam Jai Rescue Foundation have taken the body to Wachira Phuket Hospital. The British Embassy has been officially notified of Mr Rockliffe’s death.
