Patong police are investigating the death of an elderly French man who was found with his throat slashed inside his hotel room on Wednesday evening.
Pol Capt Sirinat Chuetchutraguntong, a deputy investigator at Patong Provincial Police Station, was informed of the incident on Wednesday night at 21:30 (at 20:45 according to an alternative source).
Shortly afterwards, officers and rescue workers made their way to the Delicious Residence which is a small hotel on Nanai Rd in Phuket’s Kathu district. Upon entering room no. 127, authorities found the body of Jean-François Degenne (name transliterated from Thai), aged 63, lying in a large pool of blood on the bathroom floor.
The blood, police quickly discovered, had been caused by a deep cut drawn from one side of the throat to the other. A blood-stained, 12 centimetre long kitchen knife was found next to the man’s body.
There were no indications that the hotel room had been ransacked. Instead, police found a mobile phone, a computer, a wallet and a credit card belonging to dead man.
Investigators were told the man had checked into the hotel alone on November 4 and was due to leave on November 30. A friend of the deceased told police that he knocked on his door at 9:30 that morning morning, but did not get any response.
The same friend returned to see his friend in the evening around 21:00 . When there was again no response, he became concerned and asked a member of staff to use the master key to open the door, Pol Capt Sirinat said.
Police speculated the Frenchman may have had personal problems which might have led him to commit suicide. The investigation is still ongoing; the body was sent to Patong Hospital for an autopsy.
