Two Chinse tourists were involved in a swimming accident at Sai Gaew Beach on Koh Samet. One of them died.
The unconscious body of Jeng Xu, 63, was lying on the beach when police and rescue workers arrived on the scene, Pol Maj Wirad Yodsao from Phe Provincial Police Station said. After several resuscitation attempts, Ms Xu was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Suti Sangsuwan, head of the local rescue foundation, said the two women had been swimming in the safe-zone, an area where they could walk upright. However, when the friends reached the end of the zone, they felt the sea floor suddenly fall away.
Ms Xu and her friend held on to a nearby buoy, but found themselves struggling to stay afloat. They could not always keep their heads above the water and, eventually, Ms Xu lost consciousness.
An unknown beachgoer, who realised that the two women were in distress, went to their rescue. However, after pulling both women out of the water, he discovered that Ms Xu was already unconscious.
