Jérôme Arnaud

Bo Phut Police Station confirmed today the death of a 27-year-old Frenchman who was killed after he rode a rented scooter into a parked garbage truck early this morning on Samui island in Surat Thani province.

The accident happened in front of Samui Town Center in Bo Phut subdistrict at about 03:00 on Thursday morning. The deceased was identified as Jérôme Arnaud.

Rescue workers had trouble freeing the man who had struck the front of the truck so hard that his head entered and became stuck in its grill. It took nearly an hour to extricate Mr Arnaud’s body.

The 35-year-old truck driver said he had parked to pick up the garbage around the area for about 20 minutes when he heard a loud noise. After rushing back to his truck, he discovered the crash.

According to Bo Phut Police Station, the French tourist entered Thailand on February 24. He was not wearing a helmet. The body of Mr Arnaud has been sent to Koh Samui Hospital where it is also being tested whether or not the man was driving under the influence.

The French embassy in Bangkok has been notified.
