Jonathan Gerrard

A 43-year-old kitesurfer from Ireland drowned in heavy surf off a beach in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan province. Police later found out that his control line had become entangled with a buoy.

The accident occurred shortly after midday at the beach near Soi Hua Hin 77 in Hua Hin district. Rescuers pulled him ashore unconscious and tried to resuscitate him for 10 minutes or more, but to no avail.

The victim was identified as Jonathan Gerrard, 43 years old. Police said he had been a frequent visitor to Hua Hin and was married a local Thai woman.

Mr Gerrard, a kiteboarding enthusiast, rented a space to store it at a kitesurfing shop on Soi Hua Hin 77 and owned all the specialist equipment needed for kiteboarding. He was a regular surfer at the local Hua Hin beaches.

Witnesses at the scene said they saw Mr Gerrard’s control line enmeshed with a buoy marking a swimming boundary about 50 metres offshore. This complication ended up pulling him straight down and under the waves.

Police said that although rescuers reached him quickly, it took some time to free Mr Gerrard from his harness.
