Kee Kay Soon

A 10-year-old girl and her father accidentally drowned during a family trip to a waterfall in Bueng Kan province. The tragedy took place at the Thampra Waterfall in Puwoe National Park.

Lead investigator, Pol Capt Pasin Kasitong from Sok Kam Provincial Police Station in Bueng Kan province, told reporters that had been informed of an accident involving two foreigners at 10:45 on Wednesday morning.

A team of officers, emergency doctors and rescue workers arrived at the waterfall in Seka district soon afterwards to recover the bodies and start their investigation.

Near the waterfall, the team discovered the bodies of a young girl and an older man floating in the three-metre deep water. “We identified them as Kee Kay Soon, 34, and Kee Wen Xun, 10. Both were Malaysian nationals,” investigator Pol Capt Pasin revealed later that day.

According to an initial report, the father and daughter had been on a family trip toegether with the 12-year-old sister and the girls’ Thai-born mother, Malinee. The family were visiting their relatives in Malinee’s hometown in Nakhon Ratchasima and Bueng Kan province.

One of the witnesses, a friend of the family, 34-year-old Suchart Klaisuntia, told police the accident happened just before the group was about to pack up and leave. The little girl was said to have gone back to the waterfall to clean herself up.

“She suddenly slipped off a rock and crashed into me, and we both fell into the water,” said Mr Suchart. “I wanted to pull her up, but it seemed that her leg had got stuck under a rock or branch in the water.”

Seeing his daughter struggle, her father Kee Kay Soon jumped into the water intending to save her. However, he was a non-swimmer and the water was deeper than he anticipated. He soon disappeared under the water.

The girl’s mother, who had also jumped into the water, survived and she was pulled out of the water. Sadly, both Kee Kay Soon and his daughter Kee Wen Xun drowned and their bodies had to be recovered from the site.

Rescue workers took their bodies to a hospital in Khon Kaen province for a full post-mortem examination.
