Klaus Joachim Faupel

On Wednesday morning, an Austrian man apparently lost consciousness and drowned while he was snorkelling near the island of Koh Rok in Krabi province, about 30 kilometres far from Koh Lantaon.

Tourist policeman, Lt Col Naruewat Putwiro was notified that a 75-year-old tourist had drowned during a snorkelling trip.

Rescue volunteers and officers from Chalong Provincial Police Station were standing by as the boat docked at Chalong Pier in Phuket province. They took his body to Vachira Phuket Hospital.

Police identified the man as 75-year-old Klaus Joachim Faupel who entered the Kingdom on holiday on November 27. Police examined the body and found no signs of foul play.

Investigating officer, Pol Lt Col Naruewat, learned that the man had died at around 16:00 the previous day while on a snorkelling trip with ten of his friends. They had chartered a yacht for a trip to Langkawi Island, Malaysia.

Col Naruewat summarised the events in an initial investigation report: “The yacht anchored near Koh Rok where the victim and four others went snorkelling. At some point, the deceased went into shock and fell unconscious.”

Tourist police are in the process of notifying the Austrian Consulate in Phuket. A forensic examination has been scheduled to find the reason for the victim’s sudden loss of consciousness.
