Liv Gang

A Chinese male tourist lost consciousness after he was surprised by high waves at a beach in Phuket. He later died at a nearby hospital.

The English language online news website, The Phuket News, reported the incident on Wednesday. According to the article, the deceased, who was identified as 31-year-old Liv Gang from the People’s Republic of China, had been swimming at Patong Beach a day earlier when he was hit by strong waves.

Pol Lt Col Weerapong Rakkhito of Patong Provincial Police Station informed The Phuket News of the swimming accident and said that he had received the information at 16:22 that day. Lifeguards had pulled Mr Liv out of the water about 300 metres south of Bangla Rd in Phuket’s Wichit subdistrict, but he was already unconscious.

Mr Gang was taken to Patong Hospital by Kusoldharm by rescue workers, Col Weerapong explained, but doctors were unable to save him and pronounced him dead at 16:45.

“We examined the body and found no signs of assault or injury,” Pol Lt Col Weerapong said. “Doctors concluded that the cause of death was drowning.”

Mr Liv’s wife has reportedly asked police not to investigate the death further. Police have already notified the Chinese Embassy of the incident.
