The return of a group holiday trip in Nong Khai to celebrate the Songkran festival ended in tragedy when the driver lost control of the car in a curve and flipped over, killing a Thai and a foreigner and injured 11 other passengers.

Pol Capt Atraphong Phiukhao from Ban Tueam Provincial Police Station in Ban Phue district investigated the accident which happened in Udon Thani province on Ban Phue Rd leading to Udon Thani within the Kham Bong subdistrict.

He was informed about an accident involving two dead and several severely injured passengers at around 20:00 Thursday night. Arriving at the crash site with rescue volunteers, they found the wreckage of a white Nissan Navara pickup truck lying upside down on a field next to the road.

Rescue workers could free nine people from inside the car, aged between 5 and 40 years. Two others were found several metres apart from the truck. Pol Capt Atraphong later learned they had been sitting on the tray in the back and were thrown from the vehicle during the accident.

Most of them were seriously injured and rushed to Ban Phue Hospital. A 29-year-old man and a Swiss named Mario Paravicini, 51, could only be recovered dead from the car. Mr Paravicini’s wife was also injured.

An initial investigation revealed that the group consisted of family members and friends and were en route to back to Udon Thani province after celebrating the Songkran festival in Nong Khai near the border with Laos.

While driving on Ban Phue Rd leading to Udon Thani, the driver was speeding and failed to see a curve coming. He lost control of the car, crashed into a barrier and flipped off the road.

The surviving passengers later told police that the driver had been drinking alcohol before the departure and was still drunk while he was driving. Pol Capt Atraphong detained the man and charged him with negligent driving causing death.
