Nearly three weeks after he went missing, police in Phetchaburi found the body of a British tourist in a forest near Cha-am Beach on Wednesday. Police assume he committed suicide.
Officers of Cha-am Provincial Police Station found the dead body of Martin Wood, 48, around 300 meters inland from the gulf in Phetchaburi province. The location was near the resort where he had been staying with his family before he disappeared on December 30, police said.
“We are still waiting for the results of the post-mortem examination to find out the cause of death,” Lt Capt Asawapitch Chaisri said. “But we assume that he had committed suicide.”
The body was already in advanced stage of decomposition and barely recognizable when police found it in a forest. Mr Wood had been dead for at least 18 days, forensic police determined. In his pocket, investigators found nothing except for 2490 baht in cash.
Mr Wood was last seen leaving the Dream Boutiques Hotel in Phetchaburi’s Cha-am subdistrict on Soi Cha-am Tai Rd at about 05:00 in the morning of December 30. Lt Capt Asawapitch told reporters that Mr Wood’s relatives hired locals to look for him and sought assistance from police.
A maid of the hotel named Daoroong Inpotha confirmed towards police that the body was indeed Mr Wood. She remembered the shorts and the t-shirt he was wearing when she last saw him.
According to police investigators, Mr Wood visited the hotel frequently for years. For his last trip, Mr Wood and his family had booked a room in the hotel for an entire month. It was their third week when he disappeared, police said.
In the three weeks before the body was found, Mr Wood’s family offered a reward of 10,000 baht for any information leading to the location of the husband. Hotel staff told police that Wood had health-related issues and was believed to be an alcoholic.
