A road accident in Chiang Mai province this morning caused the death of a male foreigner, Thai news website Manager Online reports.

The accident occurred at around 6:00 Sunday morning on Super Highway Rd in Central Chiang Mai near Kham Thiang Market. The foreigner who died in the crash was later identified as 39-year-old American Matthew Jason Spurlock.

According to drivers who had witnessed the accident, the foreigner, coming from Atsadathon Rd, was riding his black Suzuki 650cc motorcycle at high speed toward the intersection and turned left on Super Highway Rd.

When he saw a scooter driven by a Thai woman in front of him, Mr Spurlock attempted to break but ended up crashing directly into the vehicle. He then lost control of his motorcycle and slid into a construction barrier next to the road.

Mr Spurlock, who was not wearing a helmet, died on scene while the woman suffered severe injuries and was sent to a nearby hospital.

His body has been sent to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital.
