After a break-up with his girlfriend, an American expatriate felt he could no longer cope with his situation and ended up starving to death in his home.
Police and local rescue volunteers discovered the man, identified as 62-year-old Mesaha Toupou, on Saturday morning in his house in the district of Khlong Luang in Pathum Thani province. A neighbour informed the authorities that he had not seen Mr Toupou for several days and was very concerned about his well-being.
When officers from Khlong Luang Provincial Police Station arrived at Mr Toupou’s house, it looked dark and abandoned, an officer said. Apparently, the electricity and water supply had been cut off several months ago due to unpaid bills.
An officer present at the scene told Thai reporters, “We found Mr Toupou in a room on the second floor. He was clinging to life. He had lost a substantial amount of body weight and was barely conscious.”
Rescue volunteers rushed Mr Toupou to Thammasat University Hospital where doctors tried their best to redehydrate the malnourished victim. However, despite their efforts, doctors pronounced his death early on Sunday morning only a few hours after his admission. Doctors speculate that his death might have been due to water accumulation in his pericardium (the membrane covering the heart).
Police investigators questioned Mr Toupou’s neighbours who said that he became withdrawn and rarely left his house after his live-in girlfriend broke up with him. He was very depressed and even suicidal, said a neighbour, whose name was withheld by investigators.
Police have informed the American Embassy in Bangkok of Mr Toupou’s death. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled to document the official cause of death.
