Left by his girlfriend, an American expatriate could no longer cope with his situation and ended up starving himself to death.
Police and local rescue volunteers discovered the man, identified as 62-year-old Mesaha Toupou, on Saturday morning in his house in the district of Khlong Luang in Pathum Thani province. A neighbour had informed the authorities after he had not seen Mr Toupou for several days and became concerned about his well-being.
When officers from Khlong Luang Provincial Police Station arrived at Mr Toupou’s house, it looked dark and abandoned, an officer said. Police later found out that the electricity and water supply had been cut several months ago due to unpaid bills.
“We found Mr Toupou in a room on the second floor,” an officer who was present at the scene told Thai media. “His health was in a life-threatening condition. His body had lost a substantial amount weight, and he was barely conscious.”
Rescue volunteers rushed Mr Toupou to Thammasat University Hospital where doctors tried their best to keep the malnourished and dehydrated American alive. However, only a few hours after being admitted, doctors had to pronounce him dead early Sunday morning due to water accumulation in the membrane enclosing the heart.
Police investigators questioned the neighbours of Mr Toupou who said that he started to withdraw himself and rarely left his house after his girlfriend who used to live with him broke up with him. He seemed to have become suicidal, a neighbour whose name was withheld by police told investigating officers.
Police informed the American Embassy in Bangkok of the apparent suicide. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled to confirm the official cause of death.
