In a shocking blow to friends and relatives, Michael Schimanek from Linz in Austria drowned off the shores of Koh Samui the morning of December 31 at Laem Sor Beach while taking his daily swim.
Mr Schimanek had lived in Koh Samui for 15 years and was a well-loved member of the community known and adored for his wonderful sense of humor. Many people took kayak trips with this popular ex-pat to the Five Islands – he was something of a water expert and knew the area at Thong Krut, Taling Ngam and Laem Sor like the back of his hand.
The exact cause of his death is unknown, although a head injury was noted when he was recovered from the water approximately an hour after his death. He was found by his wife who was concerned when he failed to return from his morning swim. She found his body floating in the sea close to Laem Sor Beach.
His friends also consider health reasons or a convulsion to be a possible cause. Mr Schimanek had been involved in a road accident in Bangkok two years ago where he suffered severe injuries to his legs.
