A young Malaysian national has been shot while riding his scooter, Songkhla Provincial Police Station reported on Monday.
Residents reported the shooting to the police late Monday evening saying the man was lying dead on the road, Pol Lt Deshaowad Maagkam, the investigating officer, said. The incident reportedly occurred on Sripoovanart Rd in Hat Yai subdistrict of Hat Yai district in Songkhla province.
Following the crime, the commanding officer of Songkhla Provincial Police Station said high-ranking police officials such as superintendent Pol Col Gidtishai Sangkatawon and Pol Col Surapong Gititiraangguun were dispatched to the scene. A medical examiner from Hatyai Hospital and local rescue volunteers accompanied the officials.
Lying dead on the road was the body as Mr Mohd Nizam Bin Ahmad Basrah, 28 years of age, from Malaysia. A police report described him as dressed in a black t-shirt and navy blue jeans. An entry wound of a gunshot wound could be seen on the left side of the chest and one on the right of the hip.
His body was found surrounded by a pool of blood. He was lying next to the Songkhla registered black Yamaha scooter with the license plate 1 กฎ 6468 he had been driven. Investigators collected two 9mm bullet shells found nearby as evidence.
An initial investigation revealed the deceased had been driven towards Diana Plaza, a frequently visited shopping mall not far from the scene of the crime when the fatal shooting occurred. Bystanders who had witnessed the incident failed to disclose any details about the shooters or the scooters they were driving on.
Pol Col Gidtishai added that the murder happened at around 3:30 early morning where darkness prevented eyewitnesses from identifying the shooters. Officials involved in the case of the crime are now trying to locate the man’s address and to determine whom he had stayed with to obtain possible further evidence. Additionally, investigators hope CCTV footage recorded nearby might have caught the fatal shooting on tape.
Police have not yet been able to pinpoint the exact reason for the murder but presume it has been a result of a gang fight. However, further reasons have not been excluded from the investigation.
