Several Thai and English language media reported about a speedboat that had sunken near Koh Samui Thursday afternoon, instantly killing two foreign passengers. Two went missing.

The incident happened after a group of 36 mostly foreign tourists were on their way back to Koh Samui following a day trip to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park. Because of the rough sea that day, the operator was carefully navigating the “Aang Thong Discovery 3” speedboat back to the island.

On the way to Lomphraya Pier where the group was supposed to get off, the boat passed the north-western cape named Laem Gagi. This was where the vessel was suddenly struck by a 5-meter-high wave, flipped over and eventually capsized.

The 34 foreign tourists, three Thai crewmen and one Thai tour guide were thrown into the sea. Among them were also four children. Two tourists, a 29-year-old German and Englishwoman Monica Cozma, 28, died on the scene. Two other foreign passengers went missing.

Officers from Koh Samui Provincial Police Station were notified about the emergency at 16:20 and rushed to the scene. Together with rescue volunteers, they brought the surviving 34 tourists ashore who were keeping their heads above water by holding on to the overturned speedboat.

Police questioned Sanan Sigagaeo, the 47-year-old operator of the speedboat who survived the accident without any injuries. He said he often brings tourists to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park to show them its beautiful and untouched islands.

The trip had started at 8:00 in the morning, Mr Sanan continued. At around 15:00, the group went onboard the speedboat and headed back to Koh Samui. Throughout the way, he reduced speed to 10 knots (ca. 18 km/h) because of the high waves the boat was exposed to.

Meanwhile, Marine Police launched a search and rescue mission to find the two missing passengers. At around 11:00 Friday morning, the team discovered the body of one of the two missing persons, a 30-year-old woman from Hong Kong. The last victim, a British tourist whose age has not been revealed, has not yet been found.
