A 27-year-old American has fallen to his death from his apartment on the 5th floor in Udon Thani province where he was staying, Thai language news website Khaosod Online reported today.
Pol Capt Samai Chaibuala from Udon Thani Provincial Police Station was informed about the incident at around 7:30 in the morning. When officers and rescue volunteers arrived at Udon Mansion in Soi Thongkham Uthit, Mak Khaeng subdistrict, they discovered the body of a foreigner laying in the concrete ground behind the building.
Police searched his belongings in room no. 504 and found a United States passport identifying the man as 27-year-old Neftali Perez. Five empty bottles of Hong Thong whiskey and water were also found, but no signs of violence.
Apartment staff said he checked in alone on March 10. He had spent most of the time in his room, occasionally with a Thai woman. A witness said he came down to buy alcohol from a grocery store every day. He was last seen Sunday morning purchasing alcohol as usual, the witness told police.
After comparing to the photograph in his passport with the body, Pol Capt Samai noticed he looked thinner and less healthier.
As rescue workers prepared the body for transport, they noticed a strong alcohol smell. Police said it was possible he had been drinking alone, walked to the balcony and accidentally fallen over the railing. However, investigators have not ruled out other possible causes of death.
