Paola Emilia Bindi
An Italian tourist died after she was found unconscious in the sea off Koh Samet in Rayong province on late Tuesday afternoon.
Paola Emilia Bindi, from Milan in Italy, was pulled out of the sea by beachgoers after they had spotted the 58-year-old woman floating motionless in the water with her face down. Immediate attempts to save the tourist’s life failed – she died before rescuers arrived on the scene.
Police were notified of the incident at about 17:30, Pol Capt Banlang Bunjaruet of Phe Provincial Police Station confirmed the following day. The accident occurred at Ao Pakarang, a small bay in the south of Koh Samet in Phe subdistrict of Rayong province.
“Ms Bindi had been staying at a resort in Ao Phai about five kilometres north of Ao Pakarang,” Pol Capt Banlang, who is investigating the case, said. It was her tenth day on the island, he added.

On the day of the incident, Ms Bindi drove to the beach with her friend, the investigation found out. “The two arrived in the late afternoon and went swimming. The weather was calm; there were no waves or strong currents.”
“Her friend and other beachgoers said that they saw Ms Bindi floating unconscious in the water with her face down and immediately rushed to pull her out. On the beach, they tried to resuscitate her, but she died before rescuers could bring her to the hospital.”
Rescue volunteers brought her body by boat to a nearby pier from where she was sent to Rayong Hospital on the mainland. “We believe Ms Bindi lost consciousness due to a pre-existing medical condition,” Pol Capt Banlang said. An autopsy was scheduled to confirm the cause of death.
The Italian embassy in Bangkok has been notified of Ms Bindi’s death, police confirmed.
