A German woman was hit and killed by a pick-up truck while she was crossing the road over the weekend.
The fatal accident occurred on Phetkasem Rd in Moo 5 village, in Phang Nga’s Takua Pa district on Saturday night at around 20:30, a source told Farang Deaths. The victim was 40-year-old Peggy Braun from Chemnitz in Germany. The truck had been modified into a songtaew passenger vehicle.
Mrs Braun, who was staying at the Hotel Rukcozy with her husband, had just been shopping at Bang Niang market. The couple were on their way back to their hotel which was on the opposite side of the road to the market. Both were on the zebra crossing when Mrs Braun was hit by the songtaew at high speed and dragged several metres down the road.
The driver of the songtaew, a 17-year-old Thai, fled the scene of the accident, leaving the critically injured woman to die in the dark, in the middle of the road. She died before rescuers arrived.
Police have to identify the hit-and-run driver by viewing CCTV footage in that area. After his arrest, officers charged the perpatrator with driving without a licence and reckless driving causing death. According to Police, the truck’s registration had expired and the vehicle had no insurance.
According to an early investigation report, Mrs and Mr Braun had checked into the Hotel Rukcozy on March 28. They were scheduled to leave the Kingdom on April 26.
After briefly questioning Mr Braun as a witness, the victim’s husband said he would repatriate his wife’s body on Sunday. Police are now coordinating with the German Embassy in Bangkok to facilitate the necessary administration.
