The Phuket Lifeguard Chief has informed The Phuket News that a Russian tourist, who was pulled out of the water unconscious at Bang Tao Beach on Monday afternoon, has died.
Lifeguards recovered Petr Agapov, 57, from the water at about 14:00, Phuket Lifeguard Chief Prathaiyuth Chuayuan said. “The man was unconscious when a lifeguard brought him onto the beach.”
Rescue workers administered CPR before transporting him to Thalang Hospital. He was later transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital where, at 19:00, Mr Agapov was pronounced deceased. Doctors at Vachira Hospital stated that the cause of death was drowning.
Mr Prathaiyuth explained that the waves in the area where Mr Agapov was recovered from the water were not overly dangerous. “But our lifeguards do not patrol that area near the southern end of the beach because the hotel in that location prefers to use its own staff to look after swimmers’ safety,” he said.
“When people noticed that Mr Agapov was in danger, our lifeguards had to be called in from further up the beach. It’s not far, but in emergencies, every second counts,” Mr Prathaiyuth said.
Mr Agapov was staying at that hotel referred to by Mr Prathaiyuth the report says. The Russian Embassy has been notified of the fatal accident.
