A 72-year-old French retiree committed suicide after falling into a depression following a breakup with his Thai girlfriend. He was found deceased in his Phuket house with one of his wrists slashed.
Chalong Provincial Police Station confirmed that a neighbour notified them around 19:00 on Saturday evening that a body had been found. Deputy investigator Pol Lt Chanad Hongsitichaigun, forensic police and Phuket Ruam Jai rescue workers were dispatched to investigate the scene.
In a two-storey house on Soi Kokyang in Phuket’s Rawai subdistrict, they discovered the body of Robert Simon, a 72-year-old French national. “We found him dead with his face up on the bed in the main bedroom on the second floor,” Pol Lt Chanad told reporters the following day. “There was a deep cut on his left wrist and blood everywhere.” According to a local medical examiner, he had been dead for at least three hours.
Mr Simon’s neighbour, Satid Jantabao, who placed the call to the police told them that Mr Simon had split up with his Thai girlfriend two weeks ago. “After they broke up, he became very depressed and began drinking a lot. It looked like he was suffering badly from the breakup.”
Officers found a blood-stained knife in the bedroom as well as a farewell letter in French. In it, Mr Simon described his difficulty in coping with the breakup with his ex-girlfriend.
Rescue workers sent his body to Vachira Phuket Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be conducted later this week. “Based on the evidence we have so far, it looks like personal problems drove Mr Simon to kill himself by slashing his wrist. However, we will continue to investigate the circumstances of Mr Simon’s demise,” stated Pol Lt Chanad
The French Embassy has been notified of Mr Simon’s death.
