Russel John Calcutt

A 59-year-old man leapt to his death from a condominium in Pattaya shortly after saying goodbye to an Australian friend on Wednesday morning.

Mueang Pattaya Provincial Police Station was notified of the incident at 01:00 on Wednesday morning. The 59-year-old male, identified by police as Russel John Calcutt from Australia, was found next to the swimming area in a pool of blood.

Heading up the investigation, Pol Capt Niwad Pengkaen arrived at the 15-storey high 9 Karat condominium at 517/577 Soi Arunothai 2 (Bang Lamung’s Nong Prue subdistrict) with Sawangboriboon rescue volunteers .”We found the body between the pool and a side entrance,” Pol Capt Niwad told reporters. Mr Calcutt suffered a fractured skull and mutiple broken limbs. He had apparently chipped a drip rail before landing on the concrete floor. He died instantly.

According to Mr Calcutt’s friend, who wished to remain anonymous here, he had farewell drinks with the deceased shortly before the incident took place. Mr Calcutt left the get together quite early as he was supposed to be leaving for Australia the next day. Instead, he walked away intent on committing suicide.

Police suspect that Mr Calcutt’s emotional state might have played a role in his suicide. They seized CCTV recordings in an effort to figure out what had motivated Mr Calcutt to take his own life. His body was sent to a forensic institute for a post-mortem examination and to confirm the cause of death.
