An Italian tourist bled to death after slashing his throat and wrist in a Phuket resort. Local police are treating the death of the 59-year-old male as a suicide.
Officers from Patong Provincial Police Station entered the bathroom in his room at The Natural Resort> near Patong Beach in Phuket to find the prone and naked body of Salvatore Casolino lying in a huge pool of blood. “He was lying face-down on the tiled floor and appeared to have bled out,” investigator Pol Lt Col Somsak Tonggliang described the scene. “At first sight, his skin appeared to be all white.”
After a preliminary autopsy by a local medical examiner, police were informed about the reason for Mr Casolino’s excessive blood loss: “His throat had been slashed, and he had several deep vertical cuts on the wrist of his left arm,” Pol Lt Col Somsak said. “He most likely tried to commit suicide by slashing himself and bled to death.” A single razor blade and a knife found in the bathroom supports the investigator’s suicide theory.
The police medical examiner estimated that Mr Casolino had been dead for more than 24 hours based on the condition of the body. Volunteers of the Kusontam Foundation wrapped the body in a white shroud and transported it to Patong Hospital for a post-mortem.
According to the investigation, Mr Casolino had been staying at The Natural Resort on Phangmuang Sai Kor Rd in Phuket’s Kathu district since April 6.
Mr Casolino’s body was found by a cleaning maid who entered his room on the evening he was found. “She knocked several times but did not get any answer, so she assumed that no-one was inside,” said Pol Lt Col Somsak, adding: “She used her master key and ended up finding Mr Casolino’s body on the bathroom floor.”
The Italian Embassy is aware of Mr Casolino’s death and is assisting his family members in repatriating his body.
