Silvester Kristoffer Depusoy

Two days after he jumped off a cargo ship, the body of a Filipino man was found in the Chao Phraya River in Samut Prakan province.

At about 11:00 on Monday morning, several residents of Bang Ya Phraek subdistrict contacted Sam Rong Tai Provincial Police Station. “They said that they spotted a body floating on the Chao Phraya River,” Pol Capt Wirapon Donhuaror, who answered the call, said. “The exact location turned out to be about 200 metres from the Bang Hua Sua Pier.”

A group of divers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, police and rescue volunteers arrived to retrieve the body bringing it back to the pier for a physical examination. Pol Capt Wirapon later confirmed that “the body showed no obvious signs of violence.” The body was sent it to the Institute of Forensic Science for a full autopsy.

During their enquiries, police realised the victim as a missing person, Silvester Kristoffer Depusoy:  a 25-year-old Filipino male who had been reported missing on July 8, two days earlier. On Saturday night, Mr Depusoy was seen on deck removing his clothes around 23:30 on the Glory Marugame, a vessel registered in the Philippines.  Onlookers were surprised when he deliberately leapt overboard.

The incident was reported to police. Crew members reported that Mr Depusoy ignored their attempts to save him by throwing a life buoy for him to cling to. He deceased reportedly raised his arms and sank beneath the waves. No trace of Mr Depusoy could be found in the area in which he had last been seen.

During initial interviews, friends of Mr Depusoy told police that he was a relative of the owner of the vessel. However, it turned out that he was a waiter on the ship.

“At this stage, we do not know what drove MrDepusoy to jump into the sea,” Pol Capt Wirapon told the Thai media. “Maybe he felt frustrated that he had to work as a waiter even though he was related to the owner and had expected a more important position on the ship.”
