According The Phuket News, >an 11-year-old Chinese girl died at a Phuket hospital after she was dragged out of the sea during a snorkelling tour to Koh Khai Nok.
The Phuket News quoted Pol Maj Ekkachai Siri of the Phuket Tourist Police as saying: “A girl, called Song Jinghan, was pronounced dead at Bangkok Hospital Phuket. She had been on holiday with her family from Shandong Province in China. At this point, we don’t have any further details and have yet to confirm the reason for her death.”
The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) notified Phuket’s tourist police of a fatal incident involving a child at about 12:30 yesterday afternoon. EMS workers said they were transporting “a young Asian child” from the Nonthasak Marine Pier at Koh Sire to the Phuket Public Health Center in Phuket Town.
Police have revealed that Ms Song was on a day-tour with her family to Koh Khai Nok. The tour had been organised by Joel Thai Co Ltd., while another firm, Phuket Absolute Marine Co Ltd, provided a tour boat and captain. The 33-year-old captain, Jirasak Jareontangchokchai, told police the boat had arrived at the island about 11:40 that morning.
Once the boat stopped, the tour group, including Ms Song and her family, went snorkelling around the island. All tourists had reportedly been wearing life jackets at the time of the incident. A crew member spotted the unconscious girl about ten minutes after everyone had left the boat.
“Several crew members jumped in and helped to pull Ms Song out of the water”, said Pol Maj Ekkachai describing the rescue attempt. “She was unconscious, but still had a pulse. She was still breathing at that time, but pronounced dead at 23.30 later that day.”
The victim was first taken to Phuket Provincial Hospital and then moved to Bangkok Hospital Phuket in Phuket Town.
Police from the Koh Yao district where the incident occurred reported that they have already spoken to Ms Song’s parents and ruled out any health issues.
The investigation into the case continues. Police have not ruled out charges against the family. Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy has been notified of the 11-year-old’s tragic death.
