Stephen Francis Emma

An American citizen has been found dead in his home in Phuket’s Rawai subdistrict by a house maid, Thai news website Manager Online reported today.

Officers of Chalong Police Station were notified on February 29 at around 14:00 about a tourist who had passed away in his house in Soi Aree, Rawai subdistrict. Along with other investigators of Chalong Police Station, Pol Capt Wutiwat Liangbunjinda and rescue workers went to the scene to investigate the incident.

When they entered the room, they discovered the body of an American who was later identified as Stephen Francis Emma, 61, laying sideways on the sofa and only wearing bathrobe. Based on the condition of his skin and rigor mortis, medical staff estimated Mr Emma had been dead for at least two days.

Interrogations of the neighbors concluded that Mr Emma had been living for more than 10 years in this apartment. He house maid who found Mr Emma last called him on February 26, 19:00 to arrange cleaning service.

Neighbors told the police that he complained about constant pain shortly before his death but refused to seek medical help and instead treated himself with pain medication. Investigators also found out Mr Emma was a heavy drinker.

A post-mortem examination has been ordered to determine the cause of death and the American embassy has been notified about the case.
