Vera Rijo Maceiras
The Bangkok holiday of two young Portuguese sisters ended in tragedy when one of them jumped from the top of the hostel they were staying at. Her body was found on Sunday morning.
Pol Lt Supachai Hankamla, a deputy investigation inspector at Bang Rak Police Station, was notified of the death of a young female tourist between 07:45 and 08:00 on Sunday morning. The incident happened at the Loftel Station Hostel> on Rama IV Rd close to Bangkok’s central railway station Hua Lamphong in Maha Phruttharam subdistrict of Bang Rak district.
Forensic police officers and rescue volunteers from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the call. An employee of the hostel led the officers to a narrow alley next to the building where a wall with barbed wire separated the hostel from an abandoned building.
“The body of the woman was entangled in a barbed-wire fence and was hanging about half a metre over the ground,” Pol Lt Supachai described the scene to reporters of the Thai-language news website Khaosod Online. She was wearing her pyjamas with her top pulled up stuck in the razor fence next to an abandoned, Pol Lt Supachai added.
Police later identified the young woman as Vera Rijo Maceiras from Portugal who had just turned 27 four days earlier. She had been on vacation in Bangkok with her sister with whom she stayed together on the 3rd floor of the hostel.
A medical examiner from Police General Hospital briefly examined the body and found a deep wound on her left leg caused by the barbed wire. The wire had severed an artery which led to massive blood loss. Ms Maceiras died from exsanguination>, police summarised the doctor’s findings.
A video displaying the examination of the body showed that Ms Maceiras was wearing a grey top and pink shorts, both torn to pieces by the sharp barbed wire. According to police, officers are now probing how she came to be found in the unusual position – 15 metres below and around 4 metres to the right of where she is said to have fallen from.
They suspect she plunged from the fifth floor of the hostel after climbing out of a window and practising yoga
As part of the investigation into Ms Maceiras’s death, police viewed CCTV footage that had recorded her earlier. “She left her room at about 05:00 in the morning and went up to the rooftop on the 5th floor where she practised yoga on a narrow ledge,” Pol Lt Supachai revealed. “After some time, she climbed on the barrier and fell off the building†.”
Rescue volunteers proceeded to take Ms Maceiras’s body to Police General Hospital where an autopsy will determine the official cause of death. The Portuguese Embassy in Bangkok has already been notified of the tragic death, Pol Lt Supachai confirmed.
