A Russian skydiving instructor died during a training exercise.
Pol Maj Pongsagon Ponpan, an investigator from Nong Kham Provincial Police Station in Chon Buri province, was informed of the fatal accident on Monday morning at around 9:30. According to a statement, they discovered his body near the Nhong Kho water reservoir in Mu 7 of Nuen Saen Suk Village.
The body of Mr Viacheslav Topychkanov was found lying in a pebbled area by police and rescue volunteers. The 35-year-old skydiving instructor worked for Thai Sky Adventures Co. Ltd. which is located not far from the site of the accident.
Pol Maj Pongsagon summarised the attending emergency doctor’s findings. “Mr Topychkanov was found with several fractures. His neck, arms and legs were broken.” He added, “The victim was found in his skydiving gear. Both his main and safety parachute had been deployed by the time he reached the ground.”
According to an initial investigation report, the Russian instructor appears to have jumped out of a hang glider during a solo skydiving practice and encountered a sudden change of air direction at around 50 metres above the ground. This incidence of ‘wind shear’ caused his parachute to cave-in and irrevocably collapse, plunging him to the ground in seconds.
Viacheslav Topychkanov died on the spot.
