A Chinese woman drowned whilst taking photos of the water underworld at Koh Hong in Krabi province. She was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.
An emergency call was made to lifeguard, Supagit Pormpakdi and Jamben Pormpakdi of the Koh Hong and Than Bok Khorani National Park Protection Unit.
According to Manager Online, the incident happened on the popular tourist island Koh Hong at about 16:00 on Tuesday afternoon. A Chinese tourist, 30-year-old Wang Xi Jing, was swimming with other tourists in a bay on the northern side of the island when she suddenly and inexplicably lost conscious.
According to Mr Jamben, when they arrived on the island, they could hear a foreign man crying for help and immediately rushed to the source of the voice.
Members of the tour group explained that they had spotted Ms Wang Xi Jing about two metres below the water surface and had pulled her out of the water. Lifeguard Supagit told Manager Online, “They immediately started CPR”.
Tourists helped to carry Ms Wang Xi Jing to the rescuers’ boat and she was rushed to to the emergency room at Krabi Hospital on the mainland, about 25 kilometres away. She was pronounced dead on arrival.
Investigating the circumstances of the drowning, officials talked to a friend of the deceased who wished to remained anonymous. The witness said that Ms Wang Xi Jing wanted to take pictures of the underwater world. He had suggested she put on a life vest, but she refused.
Shortly afterwards, Ms Wang Xi Jing had returned to the beach to show her friend things she had collected from the seabed. When the witness returned from a visit to the toilet five minutes later, Ms Wang Xi Jing was already unconscious.
Officials believe that Ms Wang Xi Jing “blacked out” after she inadvertently swallowed too much water during her dive. However, they stressed that they were looking into the case once more before drawing any final conclusions.
The Chinese Embassy has been notified of Ms Wang’s accident.
